How to Change the Fonts on Your Android Phone

One of the greatest things about an Android smartphone is that you can alter the way it looks or the way it behaves if ever the time comes for you to start feeling bored about it.  There are thousands of applications on the Android Market–many of which are free–that can help you customize your phone.
We’re not just talking here about changing the wallpaper, color scheme, animations, and the like.  On Android, you can also change the font used by your phone’s operating system.  To do so, however, is not something that your phone can do out of the box.  You are going to need apps for changing fonts.
There are many font-changing apps on the Android Market; a lot of them are free, too.  Although, most of the free versions of the apps include only a limited set of features and functionalities that their full-version equivalents have.  Also, in all cases that we know of, your phone must be rooted before you can change system-related stuff such as fonts used for display.
If you want to try changing the font used on your phone, you can try two of well-known font-changing apps for Android: Font Changer and Type Fresh, which are both available from the Market.  These two apps require root access, so make sure you’ve rooted your phone before you try these.

Font Changer

Font Changer is a very straightforward application. It does not really take a whole lot of time to determine what this app does. Font Changer Lite is also available to give users a chance to use the product for free. An upgrade to the paid version is also available, which includes the following premium features:
  • screen density can be altered
  • font preview
  • others elements such as shadows, size and others may be customized
This app carries default fonts upon installation.  If there are fonts that you want to try but which are not available in the app, you will need to do the following:
  1. Copy your font of choice to the .fontchanger folder on your memory card.
  2. Run the Font Changer application.
  3. Once the application is open, it will automatically add the font of your choice into its list of fonts available.

Type Fresh

Type Fresh lets you change system fonts on your Android handset. The Type Fresh app allows you to do the following:
  • apply selected TTF fonts to the system
  • backup system fonts to /sdcard/Fonts
  • restore backed up fonts from /sdcard/Fonts
  • place any TTF files you have in /sdcard/Fonts for easy access
In order for the app to function properly, the phone should be rebooted after installing Type Fresh. Any changes made with the fonts can easily be restored by using the backup feature of this app. However, be sure to backup and save copies of your favorite fonts or old fonts if you wish to use them in the future. This app is also available for free download through the Android Market.
These are just two of the many font-changing applications available on the Android Market–and they’re free, too.  Have you tried changing the fonts on your Android phone?  What font-changing app did you use?  What font do you use on your phone?
